Video 4

Movie S4. Time-lapse movie capturing the connection of two S. oneidensis MR-1 cells via a nanowire in the perfusion platform. Green fluorescence is the result of protein staining by NanoOrange. The nanowires grew in the direction of perfusion flow (5 µL/s). The cell on the left produced two nanowires that approached the cell on the right as they grew longer. After some time, the cell–cell connection is broken. The interval between two consecutive frames is 5 min, but is reduced to 200 ms in the movie. (Scale bar: 5 µm.)

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 nanowires are outer membrane and periplasmic extensions of the extracellular electron transport components
