Contrast dependence on focal setting. This animation shows the simulated results for an annular pupil and the black to yellow test pattern shown in Fig. 4. Notice how the contrast is maximized at the focal setting that brings light at the detected spectral peak into best focus. The upper animation shows the image formed on the retina, and the lower animation is a line cut that plots intensity vs. position.
