Pairing clustered and high-frequency inputs triggered action potentials. The SPN model was loaded with background synaptic noise and a group of 20 excitatory synapses, randomly distributed in the dendrites (red dots). Three examples showing simulated membrane potential dynamics when dendritic plateaus were coupled with 20 high-frequency excitatory inputs. Action potential firing probability was calculated based on 1,000 simulations with unbiased distribution patterns. Note that spiking was successfully evoked in the first two examples, but failed in the last one. Magnification identical to Fig. 1D.
