3D reconstruction of confocal stacks of a degenerative bacteriocyte from a senescent adult aphid (A23) demonstrating the 3D distribution of B. aphidicola symbionts (green) and the microtubule network (yellow). This is the same cell presented in Fig. 4D and Movie S2. Stacks of confocal images (depth interval = 0.1 µm) are rendered as a 3D reconstruction and shown in rotational view using ImageJ software. Aphid primary symbionts and microtubules were detected with anti-Buchnera GroEL and anti–β-tubulin antibodies, respectively.
